Can NEFT and RTGS payments be done through an API

Hello, 

I am evaluating a concept which needs software to trigger an NEFT or RTGS payment from one bank account to another. Google has helped a little, but not to my satisfaction. There is no detailed documentation anywhere that touches upon this topic. 

Does anybody know how banks do this themselves? There is gotta be an API that connects to some RBI node or server and triggers a transfer. 

Can somebody point me to some more information regarding this or connect me to someone who might know?

I am still looking for an answer to this. Couldn't get anything specific from my connections either. Does anybody know anybody in the Banking industry who is aware of a banks electronic interfaces and/or functional/technical details around that?
